‘I Accidentally Fired at My Wife’

Law enforcement officials have confiscated a total of 47 firearms and over 26,000 rounds of ammunition from the residence of a Southern California judge who has been charged with the murder of his wife. The incident occurred during an argument, where 72-year-old Orange County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson allegedly retrieved a gun from an ankle holster and fatally shot 65-year-old Sheryl Ferguson in the chest at close range at their home in Anaheim Hills. According to court documents, the judge then sent a text message to his clerk and bailiff, confessing to the crime and expressing remorse.

The couple had reportedly been arguing earlier at a restaurant and continued their dispute when they returned home. According to court documents, Sheryl Ferguson made a provocative remark, inciting her husband to point a gun at her. The couple’s adult son, who was present during the incident, attempted to revive his mother through CPR, but was unsuccessful. He subsequently called 911, informing the dispatcher that his father had been drinking. The judge himself also called 911, requesting medical assistance for his wife.

On Friday, Ferguson was charged with one count of murder, along with additional charges related to the use of a firearm causing great bodily harm and death. Following his arrest, he spent one night in jail before being released on $1 million bail. Due to California’s constitution, judges facing felony charges are prohibited from performing their duties. Ferguson’s attorneys have released a statement asserting that the incident was an accident.
