Hyundai Motor America has made a bold move in the real estate market by purchasing the Liberty Inn for a whopping $22.5 million. Located at 500 W. 14th St. in Manhattan’s renowned Meatpacking District, this infamous establishment was known as a hotbed for cheating partners. This sale has set a new record for the area in terms of price per square foot.
The Liberty Inn recently closed its doors, leaving those in search of a discreet rendezvous spot disappointed. The news of the sale was first reported by The Post in July 2022, revealing that the property was being sold by a partnership called Duanco. The transaction was facilitated by Brock Emmetsberger and Christoffer Brodhead of B6 Real Estate Advisors.
Interestingly, the 6,735 square-foot building can be replaced with a structure twice its size thanks to zoning regulations. Since it is not located within the nearby historic district, any new construction will not require approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. This opens up exciting possibilities for the future of the site.
For four decades, the Liberty Inn proudly touted itself as the city’s highest-rated romantic short-stay hotel, featuring unique and lively “Amour Rooms” adorned with stylish and colorful decor. Prior to that, the triangular building was famously home to the notorious 1980s S&M club, The Anvil.
It’s worth noting that Hyundai already owns the Genesis House building at 40A Tenth Avenue, just across the street from the Liberty Inn. This building houses a showroom for Hyundai’s luxury Genesis line, as well as a high-end Korean restaurant on the second floor and a tranquil tea pavilion. The restaurant’s patrons had a prime view of the comings and goings at the Liberty Inn.
Hyundai’s plans for its new acquisition remain unknown for now. However, it can be assumed that the automaker’s intentions will be more family-friendly and in line with their brand image. Only time will tell what exciting developments await the former Liberty Inn site.
