Hyundai Motor and Kia are issuing a recall for more than 91,000 newer vehicles in the U.S. due to fire risks. Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until repairs are made.

The recall affects Hyundai 2023-2024 Palisade, 2023 Tucson, Sonata, Elantra, and Kona vehicles, as well as 2023-2024 Seltos and 2023 Kia Soul and Sportage vehicles. Approximately 52,000 Hyundai vehicles and nearly 40,000 Kia vehicles are included in the recall.

The Korean automakers have identified a potential issue with the electronic controllers for the Idle Stop & Go oil pump assembly. These controllers may contain damaged electrical components that can cause the pump to overheat. Dealers will inspect and replace the electric oil pump controller as needed, with notifications being sent to owners in late September.

Kia has reported six instances of potentially related thermal events, while Hyundai has reported four. The automakers have already eliminated the suspect part from production since March. However, in case owners notice a burning or melting odor, they are advised to have the vehicle towed to the nearest Hyundai dealer instead of driving it.

In addition to the fire risk, heat damage from the oil pump issue could lead to a short circuit that affects other vehicle controllers.

The investigation into the issue began after Hyundai received a report of heat damage on the wire harness/connector of the electric oil pump in a 2023 Hyundai Palisade. Kia also received a report of melting in a 2023 Soul.
