Hurricane Franklin poised to strike Hispaniola on Tuesday

Tropical Storm Franklin was formed on Sunday in the Atlantic Ocean and is predicted to make landfall on Hispaniola by Tuesday. This information is provided by NOAA.

Aug. 21 (UPI) — The second storm christened on Sunday, Tropical Storm Franklin, is expected to reach Hispaniola on Tuesday, according to forecasters.

Franklin was formed in the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday and as of 2 a.m. AST, it was located 250 miles south-southeast of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The storm had sustained winds of 50 mph and was moving west at 12 mph.

The National Hurricane Center, in its early Monday update, stated that Franklin is expected to bring heavy rains to parts of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico.

“The center of Franklin is forecast to reach the southern coast of Hispaniola late Tuesday or Tuesday night,” the update mentioned.

Precipitation estimates include 2 to 4 inches of rainfall across Puerto Rico, with isolated areas experiencing up to 6 inches, from now until the middle of the week. Hispaniola is expected to receive between 4 and 8 inches of rainfall, with possibilities of up to 12 inches in some isolated regions.

A Tropical Storm Warning, indicating that tropical storm conditions are expected within 36 hours, has been issued for the entire south coast of the Dominican Republic from the border of Haiti to Isla Saona.

The entire south coast of Haiti, from d’Hainault to the Dominican Republic border, is also under a Tropical Storm Warning.

Additionally, a Tropical Storm Watch, suggesting that tropical storm conditions are possible within 48 hours, has been issued for the entire north and east coast of the Dominican Republic.

Tropical Storm Emily, which was weakening on Monday and located about 1,105 miles west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, also reached tropical storm strength on Sunday. However, it is not expected to pose any threat to land.
