Hundreds of Attendees at World Scout Jamboree Fall Ill Due to Extreme Heat

The World Scout Jamboree in South Korea is taking place during a scorching summer, and the on-site hospital is bustling with activity. According to The Guardian, 138 individuals sought treatment for heat-related illnesses on Thursday alone, bringing the total to over 700 in just the first few days of the event, which began on Tuesday and will continue until August 12. CNN adds that hundreds more visited the hospital on Thursday with issues such as skin rashes and bug bites. With temperatures reaching close to 100 degrees regularly, the campsite, which is situated on land reclaimed from the sea, lacks shelter from the heat.

In the midst of the extreme heat, a Reuters reporter witnessed several scouts being carried on stretchers to the treatment area. The event has attracted more than 43,000 boys and girls from 155 countries, mainly between the ages of 14 and 17. Some nations, including the UK, have dispatched consular staff to the site in the country’s southwest due to complaints about hospital bed shortages, waterlogged conditions caused by prior heavy rains, spoilt food, swarms of mosquitoes and flies, and inadequate sanitation, as reported by The Guardian. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced on Friday that millions of dollars are being spent to improve the situation.

Officials have announced that “unlimited” air-conditioned buses and trucks with cold water are being sent to the site. Additionally, the military is assisting in setting up shaded areas, enhancing food supplies, and increasing the number of cleaning staff from 70 to over 500. Jacob Murray, the events director at the World Organization of the Scout Movement, expressed that the majority of participants are enjoying themselves, and a poll revealed that 62% of them are satisfied or very satisfied with their experience, with only 8% being very unsatisfied. “Scouts are resilient, resourceful, and have come prepared for different weather conditions,” he commented.
