How our paths crossed: ‘Stranded on a climb, I made a distress call – and he came to the rescue’ | Building Connections

Jane’s inspiration for a historical novel was sparked when she heard a story on the radio about Barbary pirates raiding the Cornish coast near her hometown. In 2005, she decided to travel to Tafraoute, Morocco, with a friend to research the story and gain a better understanding of the Berber perspective. The area is renowned for its rock climbing routes, and while there, they met a group of fellow travelers who recommended a nearby restaurant. The charismatic chef, Abdel, opened the door for them and immediately caught Jane’s attention.

The next day, Jane and her friend encountered trouble on a climbing trip and found themselves stranded. Jane called the only local number she had, which happened to be the restaurant from the previous night. Despite the language barrier, Abdel understood the situation and organized help.

During the long night, Jane couldn’t help but think about Abdel. When they finally descended the mountain the next morning, they were relieved to find him and a group of villagers waiting for them. Abdel organized a celebratory party at his restaurant to welcome them back, and the following day he surprised Jane with a silver ring in the shape of a tent, a protective charm to keep her safe.

Jane returned to her job in London but kept in touch with Abdel. Despite the challenges of language and distance, they were able to communicate honestly and intimately. After six weeks, Jane returned to Morocco and they realized their deep connection. On her last day, Abdel asked Jane about marriage, and she agreed, understanding that dating was not possible due to cultural and religious differences. They tied the knot in October 2005, and Jane moved to Tafraoute.

The couple faced bureaucratic challenges rather than religious differences, and both families welcomed their union. They now spend winters in Morocco and summers in Cornwall, combining their love for both cultures. Despite their different backgrounds, they share a passion for cooking and food, and describe each other as brave, courageous, and honest. They cherish their shared outlook on life and attribute their strong relationship to being immediately on the same page, despite being continents apart.
