Mads Mikkelsen recalls how he and Daniel Craig were instructed by director Martin Campbell to tone down their improvisation during the iconic torture scene in “Casino Royale.”

In an interview with Variety at the Zurich Film Festival, Mikkelsen reminisced about working on the 2006 film, which brought a modern twist to the James Bond franchise.

As the first film featuring Craig as the suave MI6 secret agent, Mikkelsen revealed that they bonded on set due to their shared indie film backgrounds.

Mikkelsen quoted, “Back then, he was the new Bond and everything about him was ‘wrong.’ His height, his nose, his hair. I think he was glad I also came from indie films. He had a partner in crime.”

Both actors’ desire to infuse more psychological elements into the torture scene led them to explore different directions, including a slightly homoerotic interpretation.

However, their attempts were swiftly halted by the director, and they were reminded that “It’s a Bond movie.”

They respected the director’s vision and opted for a more straightforward and traditional approach, which was ultimately seen in the final cut of the film.

Representatives for Mikkelsen, Craig, and Campbell have not responded to Insider’s request for comment at this time.

In another anecdote from the conversation, Mikkelsen revealed a moment of panic before filming “Casino Royale” when he accidentally left the script on a plane.

He recalled, “Casino Royale’ was the first screenplay with my name on every page. Which also means that if you lose it, it’s on you. I got on a plane, started to read it, and I fell asleep. Then I got out and just left it there. I was lucky some cleaning person threw it away and didn’t know what it was. That could have been the end of my career, right then.”
