House committee cancels vote to hold Mark Zuckerberg of Meta in contempt

The House committee has decided to postpone a vote on whether to hold Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in contempt of Congress for not providing all the requested documents related to an investigation into alleged conservative censorship by tech companies. Representative Jim Jordan, chair of the Judiciary Committee, tweeted that the committee had decided to hold off on contempt due to Facebook’s newfound commitment to cooperate with the investigation, but emphasized that contempt is still an option if Facebook fails to fully cooperate. If the committee had proceeded, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy would have been responsible for holding a full House vote on the contempt resolution after the August recess. If Zuckerberg were to be held in contempt, the decision of whether to prosecute would lie with the Justice Department. Meta has provided over 50,000 pages of documents and made employees available for interviews, according to Andy Stone, a spokesperson for the company. However, the committee claims that Meta has only submitted documents related to external entities and a small portion of relevant internal documents, and is requesting more internal documents for a better understanding of how Meta assessed and responded to content censorship requests. Democrats are skeptical of Jordan’s efforts, with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stating that they appear to lack factual basis and align with the Judiciary Committee’s actions during this Congress.
