House avoids vote on Biden impeachment resolution amid Republican infighting

Washington— Conservative hardliners in the House of Representatives are causing headaches for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy with their push to impeach President Biden.

On Tuesday, GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado introduced articles of impeachment against President Biden as a privileged resolution, bypassing the normal committee process for faster consideration under House rules. The articles focus on the president’s handling of the U.S.-Mexico border and immigration.

On Thursday, the House voted 219 to 208 along party lines to refer the measure to both the Homeland Security and Judiciary Committees, delaying a direct vote on the resolution itself. This move was made due to concerns by McCarthy and other Republicans that the impeachment effort was rushed.

Speaking to reporters at the Capitol on Wednesday, Boebert stated that she would bring another privileged resolution if the impeachment effort fails in committee. She proclaimed, “Yes, I will bring a privileged resolution every day for the rest of my time here in Congress if needed.”

Earlier that day, McCarthy expressed frustration with Boebert, criticizing her for the premature impeachment effort. McCarthy questioned why Boebert didn’t discuss the matter with other members of the conference before taking action. He compared Boebert’s push for impeachment to Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff’s actions during former President Donald Trump’s impeachment, emphasizing the importance of allowing investigations to play out before introducing articles of impeachment.

Other House Republicans, such as Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska, Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee, and Rep. Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota, have also voiced their desire for the impeachment process to go through regular committee procedures instead of being rushed. Meanwhile, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia plans to convert her articles of impeachment into privileged resolutions, having informed fellow Republicans about her intentions beforehand.
