Hotel in Mexico Suspends Operations Following Tragic Deaths of American Couple, Abby Lutz and John Heathco

A prestigious hotel in Mexico, owned by Hyatt, has temporarily ceased its usual operations in light of the tragic deaths of a couple from Orange County, as reported by CBS Los Angeles. Abby Lutz, 28, and her boyfriend John Heathco, 41, were discovered deceased in their hotel room last week. In a statement to CBS Los Angeles, a spokesperson for Hyatt expressed that the safety and wellbeing of guests and staff are of utmost importance, and regular operations will not resume until a thorough investigation has been conducted.

The state prosecutors in Baja California Sur, Mexico, stated that preliminary autopsies indicate that Lutz and Heathco died as a result of “intoxication by an undetermined substance.” Initially, local authorities suspected gas inhalation as the cause of death. However, the absence of any signs of violence on the bodies led the state prosecutors’ office to pursue further investigations to determine the exact cause.

According to CBS News, Lutz’s family revealed that the couple had sought medical treatment for what they believed to be food poisoning prior to their tragic deaths. They spent a night at a Mexican hospital, receiving treatment for dehydration, and returned to their hotel the following day. Lutz’s stepsister, Gabby Slate, shared that she described her illness as the worst she had ever experienced. “She texted her dad and said, ‘good night, love you,’ like she always does, and that’s the last we heard from her,” added Lutz’s stepmother Racquel Chiappini-Lutz.

The paramedic siblings who responded to the incident now find themselves burdened with medical expenses after falling ill while attending to the couple. Fernando Valencia Sotelo and Grisel Valencia Sotelo, who tried to revive Lutz and Heathco, were overwhelmed by the situation. They are currently receiving medical care at a private hospital, as stated in a fundraising campaign organized for their support.
