The state prosecutors in Baja California Sur, Mexico, stated that preliminary autopsies indicate that Lutz and Heathco died as a result of “intoxication by an undetermined substance.” Initially, local authorities suspected gas inhalation as the cause of death. However, the absence of any signs of violence on the bodies led the state prosecutors’ office to pursue further investigations to determine the exact cause.
According to CBS News, Lutz’s family revealed that the couple had sought medical treatment for what they believed to be food poisoning prior to their tragic deaths. They spent a night at a Mexican hospital, receiving treatment for dehydration, and returned to their hotel the following day. The paramedic siblings who responded to the incident now find themselves burdened with medical expenses after falling ill while attending to the couple. They are currently receiving medical care at a private hospital, as stated in a fundraising campaign organized for their support.
