Hospital Emergency Rooms Forced to Close Due to Cyberattack

Multiple states are currently experiencing disruptions in hospital computer systems due to a cyberattack. This has resulted in the closure of emergency rooms and the diversion of ambulances. Additionally, many primary care services remain closed as security experts work to assess the extent of the problem and find a resolution. The attack originated at facilities operated by Prospect Medical Holdings, a California-based company that also operates hospitals and clinics in Texas, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania, according to the AP. In response to the attack, Prospect Medical Holdings took their systems offline and launched an investigation in collaboration with third-party cybersecurity specialists.

In Connecticut, the emergency departments at Manchester Memorial and Rockville General hospital had to close for a significant portion of Thursday, with patients being redirected to other medical centers. Jillian Menzel, the chief operating officer for the Eastern Connecticut Health Network, stated that a national Prospect team is currently assessing the impact of the attack on all of their organizations. The FBI in Connecticut is also involved in the investigation.

Various services such as elective surgeries, outpatient appointments, blood drives, and others were temporarily suspended. While the emergency departments have reopened, many primary care services in Connecticut remain closed on Friday, as per the Eastern Connecticut Health Network. Similar disruptions have been reported at facilities in Pennsylvania, including the Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Taylor Hospital, Delaware County Memorial Hospital, and Springfield Hospital, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. In California, Prospect Medical Holdings operates seven hospitals in Los Angeles and Orange counties.
