HONG KONG (AP) — Coco Lee, a talented singer and songwriter from Hong Kong, tragically passed away at the age of 48, as confirmed by her siblings.
In a heartfelt statement posted on Facebook and Instagram, Lee’s elder sisters Carol and Nancy Lee revealed that Coco had been battling depression for several years, and her condition had worsened significantly in recent months.
Despite seeking professional help and making every effort to fight her demons, Coco ultimately succumbed to the darkness within her,” the statement read.
Last weekend, Lee attempted suicide at home and was rushed to the hospital, where she remained in a coma until her passing on Wednesday.
Originally born in Hong Kong, Coco Lee later moved to the U.S. for her middle and high school education. She rose to stardom in Asia during the 1990s and 2000s, captivating audiences with her powerful voice and captivating live performances.
Over her illustrious 30-year career, Lee expanded beyond her Mandopop roots and released albums in Cantonese and English.
She gained recognition as the Mandarin voice of Disney’s Mulan, providing the vocals for the character Fa Mulan and performing the Mandarin version of the movie’s theme song, “Reflection.”
In 2011, Coco Lee tied the knot with Bruce Rockowitz, a prominent Canadian businessman and former CEO of Hong Kong supply chain company Li & Fung. Although she became a stepmother to Rockowitz’s two daughters, Coco Lee did not have children of her own.
“CoCo is renowned for her tireless efforts to carve a path for Chinese singers in the international music scene, and she championed the Chinese culture with passion,” her sisters expressed in their post.
