Hilary Intensifies into a Hurricane, Possibility of Heavy Rainfall for Southern California and Southwest Region this Weekend

CNN

Hurricane Hilary has strengthened in the Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico and is projected to pass along Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, potentially impacting parts of the Western region as a weaker system.

According to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Hilary is expected to rapidly intensify into a Category 4 hurricane with winds of at least 130 mph by the end of the week.

As of Thursday morning, the hurricane was located about 320 miles south of Manzanillo, Mexico, and had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.

While Hurricane Hilary is expected to weaken significantly before reaching Southern California and parts of the Southwest, it may still bring heavy rain and flooding to these areas.

Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California at Los Angeles, has warned that some of California’s driest areas could potentially receive “multiple years’ worth of precipitation.”

Due to the uncertainty of the forecast, there is a wide range of possible outcomes as Hurricane Hilary moves parallel to the Baja Peninsula. Small deviations in its track could result in significant shifts in rainfall and impacts.

The San Diego National Weather Service has stated that this has the potential to be a highly impactful event for parts of Southern California. They acknowledge the forecast’s uncertainty and expect more details on timing, location, and magnitude of impacts in the coming days.
