Hiker’s Dramatic Rescue Caught On Bear Cam Livestream: A Riveting Tale!

Lost Hiker Interrupts Alaska Wildlife Livestream

On a popular wildlife livestream, viewers were surprised to spot a lost human hiker instead of the usual “fat bears” in Alaska. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the Dumpling Mountain live camera located at Katmai National Park.

In the summer months, viewers tune in to watch brown bears preparing for hibernation by feasting on salmon. However, the livestream on Tuesday showed a foggy and uneventful landscape.

Unexpectedly, a soaked hiker appeared on camera, shivering in the cold. Footage shows him approaching the camera, but his words are inaudible.

Concerned viewers noticed the distressed hiker, with some lip-reading the words “lost” and “help me” while he gave a thumbs-down to the camera, according to the BBC.

At 3:15 p.m., a viewer commented, “There is someone distressed on the camera,” and contacted Explore.org, the organization associated with the park’s livestreams.

Park rangers, who had no cell service at the Dumpling Mountain location, promptly arrived and rescued the hiker from the harsh weather conditions.

A National Park Service spokesperson, Cynthia Hernandez, told The Washington Post that search and rescue teams were dispatched to locate the hiker. They found him a few hours later, unharmed, and brought him back to safety.

Meanwhile, Explore.org naturalist Mike Fitz communicated with the hiker through a recorded message, advising him to stay put.

Despite being only 2 miles away from the park’s visitor center at Brooks Camp, the camera location at Dumpling Mountain feels isolated. According to Fitz, the weather conditions worsen quickly with elevation, making it challenging for hikers to navigate.
