Helen Mirren Opens Up About Golda Controversy: My Honest Conversation with the Director on My Non-Jewish Identity | Film

Helen Mirren expresses dismay over the controversy surrounding her casting as Golda Meir, the former prime minister of Israel. The actor faced backlash for not being Jewish and relying on heavy prosthetics for her transformation.

During an interview with Radio Times magazine, Mirren revealed that while she has played other Jewish roles in the past, portraying Golda Meir was a unique experience. She informed the director, Guy Nattiv, that she is not Jewish.

Gideon, Meir’s grandson, initially suggested Mirren for the role, and her involvement was essential in getting the project off the ground, according to writer Nicholas Martin.

Mirren commented on the recent controversy surrounding casting choices, referencing criticism from actors and writers like Maureen Lipman and David Baddiel.

In an article for The Guardian, David Baddiel highlighted the double standard faced by Jewish actors, arguing that they don’t receive the same considerations as other marginalized groups when it comes to casting.

Baddiel questioned why non-Jewish actors are often chosen for Jewish roles, such as Gary Oldman as Herman Mankiewicz and Rachel Brosnahan as Mrs Maisel. He also mentioned the lack of Jewish actors in the BBC drama Ridley Road, which depicts post-war antisemitism in London.

Mirren defended her decision to play Golda Meir, stating that she was willing to step away from the role if it raised any issues. However, the director reassured her and insisted that she was the right choice for the part.

Martin expressed his concern over the contentious debate surrounding casting choices, emphasizing that Mirren authentically portrayed Golda Meir according to her family and an Israeli historian.

He also criticized the growing trend of authoritarianism in the entertainment industry, where restrictions are imposed on creative decisions. He questioned whether he should only write about specific demographics.
