A passenger is voicing dissatisfaction with Hawaiian Airlines, claiming that they were only provided with a $12 food voucher as compensation for a flight delay lasting more than 30 hours.

According to a report by local television station PIX11 News, the passenger named Jeff White was stranded at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City on Tuesday, awaiting the rescheduling of his flight to Honolulu, Hawaii.

White referred to the situation as a “circus,” stating that several hundred passengers, including himself, were left waiting at the airport. Additionally, Hawaiian Airlines refused to return their bags, preventing them from taking an alternative flight to Hawaii.

In response to the delayed flight, White expressed concerns for the passengers, which included small children, elderly individuals, and mothers with newborns, who were unable to retrieve their baggage.

White reported that Hawaiian Airlines only offered a $12 food voucher as compensation to affected passengers. However, an April report by local news outlet Hell Gate NYC states that a turkey sandwich from CIBO Express Gourmet Market at JFK Airport costs at least $14.99.

White and another unnamed passenger mentioned in the report that the flight delay was caused by toxic air flowing through the aircraft’s vents.

White expressed the frustration of passengers, stating that their travel plans had been ruined and that they have suffered financial losses due to the delayed flight.

According to Hawaiian Airlines’ website, passengers are eligible for refunds and alternate travel arrangements on other carriers in the event of flight delays, misconnections, or cancellations. Hawaiian Airlines will transport passengers to their destination without additional cost, subject to availability.

In response to the delay, Hawaiian Airlines explained that the flight was held up due to staff detecting an odor during a pre-departure cabin check.

Hawaiian Airlines, certified as a 3-star airline according to Skytrax, has not yet responded to Insider’s request for comments.
