Attorneys reveal Northwestern’s multi-sport hazing scandal

Northwestern University is facing allegations of hazing in its athletic programs, with claims of misconduct in two other sports in addition to the football program. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, along with other attorneys from the Levin & Perconti law firm, have been contacted by 50 former male and female athletes who have spoken out about abuse and mistreatment. The attorneys have received disturbing details from former baseball and softball players as well. The football program, in particular, has been accused of rampant sexual abuse and racial discrimination, with coaches allegedly aware of the situation. Another lawsuit filed against former football coach Pat Fitzgerald accuses him of enabling a culture of racism. Former Northwestern quarterback and receiver Lloyd Yates, who is Black, stated that the abusive culture was especially devastating for players of color. While the attorneys have not filed a lawsuit yet, they represent 15 individuals, including Yates, and have been in contact with numerous former athletes, with the majority being football players. Former running back Warren Miles Long described a culture of sexual violence and hazing that affected every member of the football team. Northwestern University has fired its baseball coach and football coach amid the allegations. The university may face further lawsuits from former football, baseball, and other student-athletes. University President Michael Schill has announced that an outside firm will be hired to evaluate the athletics culture and its relationship to academics at the institution. Fitzgerald has denied having any knowledge of the hazing, and his legal team stated that they would aggressively defend against the allegations. Multiple lawsuits are expected to follow, with claims of sexual misconduct and racial discrimination being made against university leadership and athletic directors.
