Hamas Militant Group Launches Unprecedented Attack on Israel

The ruling Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip carried out a shocking, multi-front attack on Israel at daybreak Saturday, firing thousands of rockets and infiltrating the heavily fortified border through air, land, and sea. This surprise assault caught the country off-guard on a major holiday.

According to Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency services agency, at least 250 people in Israel have been killed and 1,500 wounded in what is now the deadliest attack in the country in decades.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a mass mobilization of the country’s army reserves, stating, “We are at war. Not an ‘operation,’ not a ’round,’ but at war.” He promised that Israel would retaliate with unprecedented force.

The attack began with an early-dawn rocket barrage that lasted for nearly half an hour. Thousands of rockets were launched from inside Gaza, causing widespread damage, some even reaching Tel Aviv. This was followed by a coordinated invasion from Hamas militants who had managed to infiltrate Israel through various locations, including the separation fence, as well as through air and sea. The militants stormed nearby border towns, demonstrating their strength by setting Israeli tanks on fire.

The severity of the situation was heightened when videos surfaced on social media showing Hamas militants parading stolen Israeli military vehicles through the streets and displaying the body of a dead Israeli soldier being trampled by an angry crowd. The Israeli military is battling the infiltrators, but casualties and the number of hostages taken by Hamas have not been disclosed.

Despite this unprecedented attack, Israel has garnered support from the United States. President Biden affirmed America’s stand with Israel, and U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin pledged to provide the necessary support to defend against terrorism. The escalation comes after weeks of tensions along Israel’s border with Gaza and fighting in the occupied West Bank.

This attack not only poses a significant challenge to Israel’s security but also puts a strain on Prime Minister Netanyahu’s far-right government. The divisions within the army may undermine Netanyahu’s reputation as a security expert.

Hamas justified their attack as a response to “Israeli crimes” and an attempt to defend the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. With casualties increasing on both sides, the situation remains volatile and uncertain.
