Aug. 24 (UPI) — A feline resident of Michigan has etched its name in history by possessing a tail measuring 16.07 inches, officially making it the longest domestic cat tail ever recorded. This record-gripping tail surpasses the previous title holder, which was held by Cygnus, a Maine coon owned by William John Powers of Farmington Hills. Cygnus set the bar high with a tail spanning a remarkable 17.58 inches, securing its position in the Guinness World Records.
Unfortunately, Cygnus and Powers’ other beloved cats tragically succumbed to a house fire in 2017. However, fate intervened when Powers was introduced to Altair, who happens to be Cygnus’ half-brother. It was an easy decision for Powers to welcome Altair into his life and provide a loving home for the remarkable feline. Speaking to Guinness World Records, Powers shared the details of his serendipitous encounter, explaining, “When I was ready to have cats again, the woman who bred Altair let me know that a litter had been born and there was a silver male kitten who was the half-brother of Cygnus.”
It quickly became evident that Altair was inheriting his brother’s extraordinary physical characteristic. Powers recalls, “It was pretty obvious that just like Cygnus, from the time he was a kitten, he had an absurdly long tail, and it just continued to get longer as he aged.”
Following an official measurement, Altair’s tail spanned a staggering 16.07 inches, solidifying his position as the new record-holder for the longest tail on a living domestic cat. Altair joins the ranks of Powers’ other esteemed feline family members who also hold world records. Fenrir, Powers’ Savannah cat, stands tall with the distinction of being the tallest living domestic cat, measuring an impressive 18.83 inches in height.
