The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is one of several federal agencies that have been affected by a global cyberattack targeting a software vulnerability.
In a statement to The Hill, the HHS confirmed that although none of their systems or networks were compromised, the attackers were able to access data by exploiting a vulnerability in third-party vendors’ MOVEit Transfer software.
“HHS is taking all necessary measures… and will keep Congress informed as the investigation progresses,” stated an HHS official.
HHS is the latest agency to report being impacted by this breach. The Department of Energy also confirmed its involvement and was even presented with a ransom demand.
The cyberattack is believed to be the work of the CLoP ransomware group, known for targeting the government. Exploiting a vulnerability in the widely used MOVEit file transfer software, they were able to gain unauthorized access to government agencies.
Investigations are underway to determine the full impact and extent of this attack.
Eric Goldstein, the Executive Assistant Director for Cybersecurity at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), confirmed that they are providing assistance to multiple federal agencies dealing with these intrusions.
