Alphabet’s Google brought its first witness to the stand on Wednesday in a landmark antitrust trial in the US. The witness, a Google executive, provided detailed insight into the company’s extensive efforts to maintain search quality. The Department of Justice had previously presented witnesses who highlighted Google’s significant payments to smartphone and wireless companies to secure the default search position on devices. These witnesses also discussed how Google’s dominance in search led to increased power in online advertising, enabling the company to raise ad prices without attracting attention. In response, Google presented its own arguments, focusing on the high quality of its search products and how they drive customer demand. Pandu Nayak, a vice president for search at Google since 2004, took the stand and discussed the company’s meticulous web indexing process, which involves filtering out irrelevant pages and ranking websites to provide users with relevant and reliable sources in response to their queries. He also discussed how Google utilizes machine learning tools to enhance its search capabilities. Nayak’s testimony seemed to downplay the significance of search query volume, contradicting Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s argument that more search queries were necessary to improve Bing but were being obstructed by Google. When asked by Judge Amit Mehta about the importance of user interaction, Nayak acknowledged its significance but emphasized the importance of other factors, such as infrastructure to track website changes. Furthermore, Nayak revealed that Google compared its search results to those of Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, and found Bing to be of lower quality. He also mentioned that Google had started comparing itself to the popular video-sharing app TikTok.
