Rugby Australia Chief Expresses Concern: Eddie Jones’ Potential Japan Talks Raise Alarms

Rugby Australia’s CEO, Phil Waugh, expressed his disappointment at the possibility of Eddie Jones interviewing for a job with Japan before the World Cup. He also refrained from commenting on Jones’s future as coach of the Wallabies until after a review has been completed.

According to Japanese media and the Sydney Morning Herald, Jones was interviewed by the Japan Rugby Football Union prior to the Wallabies’ first match in the World Cup. However, Jones has consistently denied these claims and reaffirmed his commitment to coaching the Wallabies.

Despite Jones’s denials, Phil Waugh stated that if evidence were to emerge proving otherwise, it would be viewed unfavorably. Waugh shared his disappointment, stating that it would be inappropriate for Jones to pursue job interviews during a crucial period leading up to the World Cup.

Waugh refused to label Jones as disloyal but suggested that it would be reasonable to assume disloyalty if such conversations took place during a World Cup campaign. He emphasized the disappointment felt by everyone involved, considering the Australian team’s high expectations.

The Japan Rugby Football Union declined to comment on Jones’s alleged interview.

Jones made significant lineup changes for the World Cup, excluding several experienced players. As a result, Australia failed to advance past the group stage for the first time.
