Doctors in Lebanon made a shocking discovery when they found a rare and massive vagina stone, about the size of an orange, lodged in a woman’s pelvis. This extraordinary finding was detailed in a recent case study published in Urology Case Reports, involving a 27-year-old woman with cerebral palsy who was bedridden.
Vaginal stones can form in two ways: through the crystallization of urine buildup in the vagina, or when an untreated bacterial infection causes urine to harden. In this particular case, the primary cause was urine stagnation, as no bacterial infection was found in the woman.
The patient had a history of urinary incontinence, a common issue for people with cerebral palsy that can lead to urine leakage in the vagina. She complained of stomach pain, and due to the rarity of the condition, the diagnosis was delayed until symptoms were noticed three days before she was rushed to the emergency room, experiencing fever, chills, vomiting, abdominal pain, and decreased appetite.
A CT scan revealed the culprit, a large stone pressing on the woman’s bladder, causing more urine leakage. Doctors used laser therapy and ultrasound shockwaves to break up the formation and then removed the fragments using forceps in a three-hour procedure. Following the operation, the woman was discharged and put on antibiotics.
The authors of the case study recommended that people with cerebral palsy undergo routine gynecologic examinations and X-rays if vaginal stones are suspected, due to their increased risk of suffering from urinary incontinence and developing vaginal stones.
