The senators, which include Mike Rounds, Kirsten Gillibrand, Jacky Rosen, and Rick Scott, emphasized the potential life-saving impact of providing tangible support to Israel, a crucial ally. NBC News has reported that the United States Army currently possesses two Iron Dome batteries that are not in use and stored within the country.

According to NBC, Israel currently has at least 10 Iron Dome batteries stationed across different locations in the country. The Wall Street Journal explains that the Iron Dome system relies on radar detection to assess the speed and trajectory of inbound missiles. Computers at the control center then determine if the missile is likely to hit a populated area. If so, interceptor missiles are launched from the batteries, effectively exploding the incoming missiles in mid-air. ABC News adds that each Iron Dome battery is equipped with three or four launchers, each capable of holding up to 20 Tamir interceptor missiles. The Iron Dome system has been protecting Israel since 2011.
