Germany Receives US Approval for Potential $2.9 Billion Missiles Sale

The State Department has given its approval for the sale of air-to-air missiles to Germany, in a deal valued at approximately $2.9 billion. Germany will be acquiring 969 AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and related equipment. This decision was announced by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the Pentagon division responsible for foreign military sales and transfers.

The approval of this sale is expected to enhance U.S. national security and foreign policy objectives, as it strengthens a NATO ally that plays a crucial role in maintaining political and economic stability in Europe. Additionally, the agreement will bolster Germany’s defense capabilities by providing them with advanced air-to-air munitions that can effectively counter current and future threats.

Amid Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the Biden administration has recently authorized several significant arms deals with European allies. One such deal is a potential agreement worth $605 million to supply 250 AMRAAMs to Sweden, a country aspiring to join NATO. This sale was announced on July 7. Another notable agreement involves the sale of Hellfire missiles to France, estimated to be worth $203 million, as revealed by the Pentagon on the same day. Furthermore, defense officials disclosed on June 30 that the State Department had granted approval for a potential $105 million project to modernize 32 F-16 fighter jets for Romania.

Once the potential sales are reviewed by Congress, negotiations will commence to finalize the cost and quantity of the equipment being sold. It is important to note that the abovementioned content is the intellectual property of Nexstar Media Inc. and any unauthorized use is strictly prohibited.
