GE and Kenmore among brands recalled as over 1.5 million dehumidifiers after 23 fires

Over 1 million dehumidifiers, including popular brands like GE and Kenmore, are being recalled due to the risk of fire and burns. The dehumidifiers were manufactured by Gree USA, the American division of a Chinese appliance company, and have been linked to 23 fires and 688 incidents of overheating. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall, stating that the devices can overheat, smoke, and catch fire.

This recall affects 1.56 million units sold under various brand names at major retailers such as Home Depot, Lowe’s, Menards, Sam’s Club, Sears, and Walmart from 2011 to 2014. These dehumidifiers have caused approximately $168,000 in property damage and should be unplugged immediately, according to the safety agency. Consumers are advised to stop using the dehumidifiers, unplug them, and contact Gree to receive a refund.

The recall encompasses 42 different models sold under brand names like Kenmore, GE, SoleusAir, Norpole, and Seabreeze. It is worth noting that this is not the first recall of Gree dehumidifiers, as previous recalls were issued by the company in 2013, 2014, and 2016. In fact, there have been reports of four deaths potentially linked to these devices due to house fires.

Earlier this year, Gree USA was fined $500,000 by a California court for failing to notify the CPSC about the defective dehumidifiers it sold to consumers, which could catch fire. Consumers looking to obtain a refund for their recalled dehumidifiers can visit Gree’s website and click on the designated link to register for the recall, with an estimated wait time of 6 to 8 weeks for further instructions.

If consumers feel that Gree is not adequately addressing their refund request, they can notify the CPSC using the provided Recall Complaint Form. The dehumidifiers ranged in price from $110 to $400.
