County Official in Texas Switches from Democratic to GOP, Citing Border Policies as ‘Unprecedented Crisis’

EXCLUSIVE: Kleberg County Attorney Kira Talip Sanchez, a Democratic county official in Texas, has made the surprising decision to switch to the GOP. In an announcement to Fox News Digital, Sanchez revealed that her support for law enforcement and border security policy were the primary factors behind her party switch. She formally addressed the Hispanic Republicans of Texas PAC at their 2024 election season kickoff event, emphasizing her alignment with the Republican Party’s commitment to law and order and the protection of citizens.

Kleberg County, located in southern Texas and bordering the Gulf of Mexico, has historically leaned blue. However, it voted for former President George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004, and narrowly supported former President Donald Trump in 2020. Sanchez pointed to the “unprecedented” border crisis as a major catalyst for her decision to switch parties.

As stated by Sanchez, “As County Attorney, I have been proud to work with law enforcement to ensure the safety of the citizens of Kleberg County. There is an unprecedented crisis at our southern border. I believe that the GOP’s policies of law and order, protecting safety, and backing the blue best align with my values and the values of the citizens of Kleberg County.” She expressed enthusiasm for working alongside her colleagues to maintain the safety of South Texas.

Many Texas Republicans have voiced their dissatisfaction with the federal government’s response to the border crisis. They argue that President Joe Biden’s policies have been ineffective or negligent. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has even faced a lawsuit by the Department of Justice over Texas’s floating buoy barrier on the Rio Grande, which he deems necessary.

In July, Customs and Border Protection reported a significant increase in migrant encounters at the southern border, with 183,503 encounters compared to June’s 144,566. This alarming surge further strengthens Sanchez’s reasoning for her party switch.

In response to Sanchez’s party switch, Cassy Garcia, President of the Hispanic Republicans of Texas, expressed excitement about continuing outreach efforts with Democratic voters throughout the state. Garcia believes that the Democratic Party has become too radical, elitist, and disconnected from their values.
