Gaza City residents are evacuating the area waving white flags along the “dangerous” route south, given a four-hour warning by Israel before its ground forces were set to advance. The Israel Defense Forces recorded footage of Palestinians traveling from Gaza’s largest city to safer areas between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Hamas, which claims close to a million Palestinians are still in northern Gaza, accused the IDF of forcing residents to wave flags to humiliate them. A resident stated, “We saw the tanks from point-blank. We saw decomposed body parts. We saw death.” According to Gaza health officials, more than 10,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel’s airstrikes in the month after terrorists invaded Israel. Israel implored Palestinian residents to flee their homes as two Israeli airstrikes in southern cities killed multiple civilians. In a direct comment, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel would secure Gaza for an “indefinite” amount of time after removing Hamas from power. Netanyahu rejected a proposal from President Biden to pause the fighting but stressed demands for “humanitarian pauses.” “It has been one full month of carnage, of incessant suffering, bloodshed, destruction, outrage, and despair,” said UN Human Rights Commissioner Volcker Turk in a statement. While some Palestinians with foreign passports have been permitted to escape, most Gaza residents have been trapped in the narrow strip. “It’s just a horror movie that keeps putting on repeat,” said Suzan Beseiso, 31, a Palestinian American who was able to leave Gaza for Egypt. Both sides have dismissed calls for a cease-fire, with Israel demanding hostages be released first and Gaza saying it would not free them until the bombardment ends.
