Gatwick Airport Faces Fourth Air Traffic Control Chaos – Covid Blamed for Cancellations and Delays: Over 60 Flights Affected and 8,000 Passengers Left Waiting

Flight cancellations at London Gatwick Airport due to Covid-19 outbreak amongst air traffic controllers have caused chaos for passengers. A total of 64 flights were cancelled over the past two days, leaving approximately 8,000 passengers stranded. FlightRadar24 data revealed that there were 31 cancelled arrivals and 27 cancelled departures yesterday, with six arrivals cancelled today. EasyJet, one of the affected airlines, experienced delays of up to seven hours due to a drop in the flow rate of planes using the runway. The disruption was caused by last-minute staff sickness, including Covid-19 cases. This is the third time in a month that air traffic control staff sickness has led to chaos at Gatwick Airport. Passengers were left frustrated by the lack of contingency planning and poor management of cancellations. They took to social media to voice their complaints, with some expressing their disappointment in airline customer service. Vueling also cancelled flights to and from Barcelona, Bilbao, and Paris. Both Gatwick Airport and National Air Traffic Services (Nats) apologized for the inconvenience caused and assured passengers that they are working to minimize disruptions. Nats explained that they have been increasing the number of controllers to improve resilience but short notice absences may still lead to the implementation of air traffic control regulations for safety purposes.
