Gannett, Publisher of USA Today, Files Lawsuit Against Google Alleging Online Ad Monopoly

Dan Taylor, the Vice President of Google Ads, firmly refutes the claims, stating that they are entirely false. Publishers have a multitude of options when it comes to utilizing advertising technology for monetization. In fact, Gannett, a prominent publisher, employs numerous competing ad services, including Google Ad Manager. Furthermore, publishers who choose to utilize Google tools retain the vast majority of their revenue.

Notably, in addition to its prominent US brands, Gannett also owns Newsquest, a company that controls distinguished British newspaper titles such as the Oxford Mail and Brighton Argus.

Google currently faces numerous legal and regulatory challenges due to growing concerns about its dominant position in the online advertising ecosystem.

Critics have highlighted Google’s control over all aspects of the advertising market. The tech giant holds substantial influence in both buying and selling ad spots, along with the ad exchange, which conducts auctions. It is estimated that Google’s market share in this sector reaches up to 90%.

In January, the US Department of Justice initiated an antitrust lawsuit against Google for its monopolistic control of the online advertising market. The lawsuit alleges that the company unlawfully shuts out competitors, thus maintaining its dominance.

Additionally, the UK and the EU have both launched competition investigations into Google’s practices. Last week, Brussels intensified its efforts to challenge Google, seeking to dismantle the tech giant’s ad business.

Furthermore, a £13.6bn class action lawsuit was filed in the UK last year, accusing Google of profiting excessively from advertising while negatively impacting hundreds of thousands of publishers.
