In a recent Gallup survey, it was found that 50% of Americans have tried marijuana recreationally, although a smaller percentage of individuals use the drug regularly.
The survey, which was published on Thursday, revealed that 50% of respondents admitted to trying marijuana, while only 17% reported regular usage.
This represents a 2-point increase from a similar poll conducted in January 2022, where 48% of respondents acknowledged trying the drug.
Among different demographics, it was found that Democratic men were the most likely group to use marijuana.
When considering political party affiliation, 57% of Democratic respondents admitted to trying marijuana, compared to 52% of independents and 39% of Republicans. In terms of gender, 53% of men and 44% of women reported trying marijuana.
There was minimal variation by age group. Fifty-one percent of respondents between the ages of 35 and 54 admitted to trying marijuana, while the percentages for those aged 18-34 and 55 and older were 49% and 47%, respectively.
Currently, 23 states and Washington, D.C., have legalized the recreational use of marijuana.
The most recent state to legalize recreational marijuana use is Minnesota. In May, Governor Tim Walz (D) signed legislation permitting individuals over the age of 21 to possess up to 2 ounces of marijuana in public and up to 2 pounds in total. This legislation officially took effect last week.
The Gallup poll was conducted from July 3-27 and involved 1,105 respondents. The poll has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
