G20 Declaration Treads Lightly on Russian Invasion of Ukraine: Exploring Non-Geopolitical Solutions

The Group of 20 (G20) summit in New Delhi, India, took place without the presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Unlike last year’s statement, the G20 declaration did not explicitly condemn Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

While acknowledging the human suffering caused by the war in Ukraine, the G20 statement focused on reiterating national positions and resolutions adopted at the UN Security Council and General Assembly. The leaders emphasized the need for all states to act in accordance with the UN Charter.

The G20 emphasized that its focus is primarily on economic discussions, not security issues. They recognized the impact of the Russo-Ukrainian War on global food supply and energy security but noted differing views and assessments of the situation.

The joint statement reiterated the G20’s role as the premier forum for international economic cooperation and acknowledged that geopolitical and security issues can have significant consequences for the global economy.
