Fullerton Man Faces Charges of Carjacking and Police Pursuit

A 33-year-old resident of Fresno made his initial appearance in federal court on Thursday, facing charges related to a carjacking incident that resulted in a police pursuit in Fullerton.

Deshawn Ricks was apprehended on Wednesday based on a federal criminal complaint. He was ordered to remain in custody and his arraignment is scheduled for July 3.

The carjacking incident was reported to the Fullerton police just before 2:40 p.m. on Wednesday at a parking structure located at 122 E. Wilshire Ave., between Harbor Boulevard and Pomona Avenue.

According to the victim, she was inside her vehicle when Ricks forcefully opened the door and demanded that she exit. When she refused, he used what she believed to be a “shank” against her back, threatening to stab her if she didn’t comply, as stated by the police report. Ricks then proceeded to physically pull the victim out of the vehicle, grabbing her body and hair.

Before fleeing the scene in the stolen 2022 Mazda CX5, the victim managed to retrieve her purse from the car and sought assistance.

The victim stated that Ricks drove the stolen vehicle towards her and she had to quickly jump out of the way to avoid being hit. At 2:49 p.m., the police located the stolen car and attempted to initiate a stop, but Ricks refused, initiating a high-speed pursuit through the city.

The pursuit, as alleged by the police, involved reckless actions such as driving into oncoming traffic, speeding, running red lights, and even colliding with a marked police vehicle.

Ricks eventually lost control of the stolen car and it was disabled by a police vehicle, bringing the pursuit to an end. He made an attempt to flee on foot but was swiftly apprehended by officers. A metal stake-like object, measuring approximately one foot in length, was discovered inside the stolen vehicle.

According to the police, Ricks has a criminal record that includes previous arrests for burglary, domestic violence, false imprisonment, pimping, threats, and possession of drugs with intent to sell. He was also being sought after for failing to appear at an arraignment in Fresno County in April on charges of making threats with intent to terrorize and possession of a deadly weapon.
