From Men’s Wearhouse to Jail: A Remarkable Journey of Success and Consequences

A former executive at Men’s Wearhouse has been sentenced to prison for nearly two years after admitting to stealing $1.7 million from the company and its parent company, Tailored Brands. The scheme involved creating a fake vendor and approving fake invoices, tasks that the executive was authorized to do. Gina Suzanne Lonestar, aged 52, has been convicted of wire fraud and will be serving 22 months behind bars, according to CBS News.

It was discovered that Lonestar had fabricated a document to show that the vendor was related to her by sole proprietorship. The funds from the phony invoices were then deposited into her joint checking account, according to the Mercury News. The embezzlement started in late 2010 during Lonestar’s time as a facilities department director and continued for over eight years as she was promoted through various positions. The scheme unraveled after an internal audit in 2019.

Lonestar was indicted by a federal grand jury and initially faced six counts of wire fraud, but she pleaded guilty to one charge. The FBI assisted in the investigation that led to her arrest. She will start serving her sentence in January and has been ordered to pay back the stolen amount and undergo three years of supervised release. A court hearing for restitution issues is scheduled for December 1. (Read more embezzlement stories.)
