Expert Opinion: Beware of Trendy TikTok Hacks – Why Drivers Should Never Follow Them

Drivers have been warned to steer clear of a TikTok hack that could result in significant vehicle damage. The viral video demonstrates influencers using a mixture of white vinegar and coconut oil to eliminate scratches on car bodywork. By applying the solution to a cloth and then splashing it onto the surface, the influencers claim that surface-level dents vanish within seconds. Several accounts have reposted their own versions of the clip, originally posted by TikTok user @aubreesmommy.1, which has garnered over a million views.

However, Sal Patel, an expert in automotive matters from Finest Car Mats, cautions against trying this seemingly simple solution. He explains, “The videos create an impressive illusion, making it appear as though the scratches magically disappear. In reality, the mixture acts as a temporary cover-up, similar to a moisturizer. Once the mixture dries, the scratches become visible again. Not only does this hack prove ineffective, but it has the potential to inflict further damage to your car’s paint job, leading to a hefty bill from a professional.”

Some social media users justify trying this DIY remedy, claiming that the homemade concoction can be made for under £15 using easily accessible items from stores and supermarkets. This is significantly cheaper than the fees charged by professionals, who can demand up to £150 for dent repairs.

Despite these claims, Mr. Patel emphasizes that vinegar has the potential to corrode the bodywork and strip away the paint’s shine, resulting in long-term harm to the vehicle’s appearance. Additionally, vinegar’s properties may cause further scratches. He warns, “Using vinegar on your car’s paintwork is not advisable. While vinegar is not the most potent acid, it can still cause corrosion and damage the paint. Over time, this can deteriorate the clear coat, leaving your car looking dull.”

Furthermore, Mr. Patel points out that vinegar lacks the necessary lubrication found in specialized scratch-fixing products. Consequently, when using a cloth with vinegar to treat scratches, more harm can occur. He remarks, “Non-lubricating solutions act like sandpaper when combined with dirt, leaving your car with dull patches that are expensive to repair. For these reasons, vinegar should not be used to remove scratches or clean your car.”
