French Cop Who Killed Teen Receives $1.63M in GoFundMe Funding

A crowdfunding campaign organized by a controversial French far-right figure, Jean Messiha, to support the family of a police officer who was jailed for the killing of a 17-year-old and sparked riots in France has come to a close. The campaign raised over 1.5 million euros ($1.63 million). However, there have been criticisms and plans for lawsuits, with claims that Messiha’s true intention was to promote hatred and incite conflict between the far-right and residents of impoverished immigrant communities. Even Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti expressed concerns about the campaign’s impact on the situation.

Messiha, in a tweet, praised the campaign as a “historic symbol of national generosity” but announced its closure at midnight on Tuesday. He highlighted the overwhelming response from more than 100,000 donors, describing it as a “tsunami” in support of law enforcement officers who tirelessly uphold the essence of France.

The crowdfunding campaign took a dark turn when Messiha boasted about raising more funds than another campaign for the family of Nahel, who filed a complaint alleging deception and an attempt to “criminalize” the victim in order to gain support for the police officer. It remains uncertain whether an investigation will be launched. Socialist lawmaker Arthur Delaporte had already filed a complaint disputing the campaign’s legal basis. GoFundMe, amidst the controversy, declined to shut down the fundraiser, stating that it did not violate any rules since the money was intended for the officer’s family and not his legal defense, as reported by The Guardian.
