Frans Timmermans Ponders Dramatic Comeback to Dutch Politics

Frans Timmermans, the European climate commissioner, announced his plan to return to Dutch politics after almost ten years in Brussels. He intends to campaign as the next prime minister and lead a joint effort by the Labour and Green parties in the upcoming general election. However, winning the coalition’s leadership race will be a challenge, given the presence of over 20 parties competing for power.

The collapse of the governing coalition due to a dispute over immigration measures has left Mark Rutte as caretaker prime minister, while tensions escalate regarding climate change and the economy. Timmermans, a staunch supporter of emission-cutting measures, will have to contend with the Farmer Citizen Movement (BBB), a populist party that gained popularity by backing farmer protests against farm closures.

In Maastricht, Timmermans stressed the need to unite the Netherlands, addressing the country’s fragmented political landscape and the challenges it faces, such as the climate crisis and conflicts at Europe’s borders. While some analysts believe the Labour/Green alliance could secure enough seats to win the election, the Dutch political system remains highly divided with 20 parties and independents in parliament.

Notably, Timmermans faced resistance from centre-right parties, including the Dutch Christian Democrats, regarding ambitious EU climate policies. Nevertheless, he has been actively involved in advocating for a nature restoration plan and a reduced use of pesticides.

Despite recent losses for socialists in several European countries, Timmermans remains optimistic about his chances. The Labour and Green parties currently hold around 18% of the vote and have decided to form a shared list. Other major parties in the election will have new, untested leaders, potentially giving Timmermans an advantage.

Timmermans’ commitment to the EU’s Green Deal, aiming to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, has been widely acknowledged. While he continues in his role as European climate commissioner, his campaign for the Dutch prime ministership continues.
