Hurricane Franklin is showing significant strengthening on Monday morning, as it pushes north through the Caribbean. This makes it the first major hurricane of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm has gained maximum sustained winds of 115 mph, categorizing it as a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, according to the National Hurricane Center’s 5 a.m. EDT update.

Forecasters predict that Hurricane Franklin will continue to intensify throughout Monday and gradually weaken by Tuesday afternoon. As of now, the storm is located about 393 miles north of Grand Turk Island and 505 miles southwest of Bermuda. Its current trajectory is north-northwest at 8 mph.

There are currently no warnings in effect, but the NHC anticipates that watches will likely be necessary for Bermuda later on Monday. Swells generated by Hurricane Franklin have already begun impacting the British island territory. The NHC warns of potentially life-threatening surf and rip currents along the U.S. east coast this week.

While Franklin targets Bermuda, Tropical Storm Idalia is heading towards Florida and is expected to make landfall as a hurricane on Wednesday.
