Amid an ongoing strike against Hollywood producers, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) have re-elected Fran Drescher as union President and Joely Fisher as Secretary-Treasurer. The new two-year terms for both executives began on Friday, as announced by the union.
In her statement, Drescher expressed her honor in serving her union as president for another term and her commitment to unity, principles, and amplifying the major contributions of actors in the collaborative art form. She also emphasized her goal of ensuring equal opportunities for all members and fighting against marginalization and discrimination within the union and the industry at large. Drescher envisioned a future of respect, patience, and understanding, free from politics, and was optimistic about the union’s progress in the next two years.
The national officers election received a significant turnout, with 28,430 of the 124,477 eligible voters returning their ballots. Drescher received 23,080 votes, securing her re-election as president, while Maya Gilbert-Dunbar received 5,276 votes. In the race for secretary-treasurer, Fisher received 19,777 votes, and Peter Antico received 8,361 votes.
Unfortunately, there is no end in sight to the strikes that have brought film and television production to a standstill. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has been on strike since May, and SAG-AFTRA joined the action in July. While the studios have had recent meetings with the WGA, there have been no known contract talks between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
Both unions are striking for similar reasons, primarily focused on securing fair residuals for streamed content and establishing protections against the use of artificial intelligence. The unions are determined to address these critical issues and ensure a more equitable future for actors in the industry.
