Former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard suffers early exit in first round of qualifying

Former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard suffered a disappointing defeat in the first round of qualifying at this year’s tournament, signaling the ongoing struggles in her tennis career. The Canadian tennis star, once hailed as a rising star after winning the Wimbledon girls’ title in 2012, reached the pinnacle of her career in 2014 when she made it to the semi-finals of both the Australian Open and French Open, ultimately finishing as the runner-up at Wimbledon to Petra Kvitova.

However, injuries and poor form have plagued Bouchard ever since, causing her to plummet in the rankings. Currently ranked at No. 218 in the world, the 29-year-old spoke to Mail Sport’s Mike Dickson in April about her challenges and aspirations for a career comeback, expressing empathy for the difficulties faced by emerging talent like Emma Radacanu in balancing sports and fame.

Unfortunately, Bouchard’s quest for a resurgence will have to be put on hold as she fell in straight sets to Belgian player Greet Minnen in the first round of qualifying. Despite putting up a fight in the second set and leveling the game at 5-5 after being down 5-3, she ultimately succumbed to a 5-7 defeat. This loss extends her absence from the tournament to at least five years since her first-round exit in 2019.

Since her remarkable run in 2014, Bouchard has struggled to replicate that success in Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the second round only five times out of 26 attempts. The defeat serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by Bouchard in her quest to regain her former glory.
