Former Russian diplomat warns Prigozhin to fear for his safety

In an intriguing interview, a former Russian diplomat expressed concern regarding the life of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner Group. Despite reports of a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end his rebellion against Moscow’s military leaders, Boris Bondarev believes that Prigozhin should still be worried.

Bondarev, who left his position at the United Nations in protest against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, shared with Australian media outlet ABC that Wagner’s rebellion had a significant impact on Putin’s hold on power. “It damages Putin’s image as a decisive leader who can crush anyone,” said the former diplomat in the interview published on Monday. He believes that Prigozhin should be concerned because Putin may not easily forgive this.

Bondarev further referred to Russia as a fascist state and pointed out that very few individuals in high positions dare to openly challenge Putin. He regarded Wagner’s rebellion as an “experiment” and commented on Prigozhin’s lack of clear goals. He stated, “When Mr. Prigozhin did this, we understand that he lacked goals. He didn’t really understand what he was going to do. That’s why he had to turn away, but if he had had vision… another situation would have unfolded very differently.”

Over the weekend, Prigozhin called for an armed rebellion, aiming to remove Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu from power while challenging Putin’s justification for the ongoing war with Ukraine. However, he eventually ordered his private army to halt its advance after reaching an agreement brokered by Belarus. The deal involved dropping charges against Prigozhin for leading an armed rebellion and his relocation to Belarus.

Now, the future remains uncertain for Prigozhin and his army, with President Biden stating on Monday that the outcome of the schism is yet to be seen. Prigozhin, on the other hand, claimed in an audio file posted on his Telegram channel that there is public support for his march on Moscow. “We started our march because of injustice. We did not have the goal of overthrowing the existing regime illegally,” Prigozhin explained.
