Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn has made the decision to reduce the sentence of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to one year. This comes after Thaksin returned from 15 years of self-imposed exile. The news was published in the Royal Gazette, stating that Thaksin had accepted his crime, showed remorse, and respected the judicial process. The king’s decision takes into consideration Thaksin’s health issues. Thaksin was known for his anti-drug policies and crackdown on terrorism during his time in office. He was deposed in a military coup in 2006 and subsequently convicted of corruption charges. Thaksin’s return to Thailand aligned with the election of his ally, Srettha Thavisin, as the prime minister.
