Former California tech executive, Lexi Reese, has decided to end her campaign for the U.S. Senate seat that was previously held by the late Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Reese stated that her inability to raise the necessary funds for a first-time candidate was a major factor in her decision. She also emphasized the need for term limits and campaign finance reform to make entering the race more feasible for individuals without extensive political ties.
Reese, a former Google and Facebook executive, entered the crowded Senate race in June as a fresh face with a new message. Despite her efforts, she was unable to gain momentum and break into the top tier of candidates, which includes well-established Democratic figures such as Katie Porter, Adam Schiff, and Barbara Lee.
While Reese raised over $1.8 million for her campaign, her financial resources paled in comparison to her competitors, with Adam Schiff closing September with over $32 million in his campaign coffers.
In her departure statement, Reese expressed frustration with the dominance of career politicians and former lawyers in elected offices, citing their inability to effectively address crucial issues like climate instability, gun violence, economic inequality, and homelessness. She also urged her own party to shift its focus away from former President Donald Trump and corporate “evil-doers” and recognize the widespread distrust many Americans feel towards the government.
Despite the conclusion of her Senate bid, Reese remained optimistic, emphasizing the potential for change with the right leaders.
Ultimately, this Senate seat is expected to remain in Democratic hands, with Republicans such as former baseball MVP Steve Garvey and attorney Eric Early vying for the position.
