According to Brown, the property he’s currently managing is the most famous one he’s ever dealt with. Known as the Cobstone Windmill, this picturesque windmill is located in Buckinghamshire, England and was featured in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Surrounded by 37 acres of land, paddocks, and a swimming pool, the property is now up for sale at a price of $9.4 million, as reported by the New York Times. In the 1968 movie, it served as the home of the eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts, played by Dick Van Dyke, and his children. Brown envisions the allure of inviting friends to stay at the most well-known windmill in the world.
Built in 1816, the Cobstone Windmill operated as a cereal grinding mill until 1873, according to the real estate listing. When Chitty Chitty Bang Bang producer Albert “Cubby” Broccoli discovered it, a significant renovation project was undertaken. This included the restoration of the sails and repair of fire damage, all in preparation for its appearance on the big screen, as reported by the Times of London. More renovations followed when the property was purchased by Parent Trap star Hayley Mills and her husband Roy Boulting in 1971 for approximately $38,000. The main house was converted into a spacious six-bedroom family home.
Mills expressed her immediate affection for the windmill in her 2021 memoir Forever Young, describing it as the children’s home in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Since Mill and Boulting, the property changed hands two more times before hitting the market again in 1988. Located around 50 miles from London, the property has also appeared in various other film and television productions, including Midsomer Murders, according to LBC.
