Sept. 4 (UPI) — Tropical Storm Haikui made two strikes at Taiwan before retreating back to sea on Monday, leaving nearly 80 people injured and widespread damage across the country.

Despite the storm’s intensity, Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operation Center reported no fatalities.

The agency, however, confirmed 78 injuries, with 23 occurring in Kaohsiung City, 20 in Taitung County, and 13 in Tainan City.

Haikui, downgraded from a typhoon to a tropical storm early Monday, twice passed through southern Taiwan before moving northwest at a speed of 6 mph. By nightfall, it was located 43 miles south-southwest of the Penghu islands.

During the storm’s initial pass through Taitung, damage along the coast could be observed in the mountainous county, which has a lower population density.

Emergency officials reported that 217,000 homes were without electricity at the start of the day, with over 1,000 structures damaged. As the day progressed, the number of power outages decreased to 58,000.

Haikui, the 11th typhoon of the year, was originally projected to cross the Taiwan Strait towards mainland China. Fujian and Guangdong provinces in China were put on alert for strong winds and heavy rainfall by China’s State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.
