A rioter from the U.S. Capitol, who took the opportunity in court to verbally assault federal prosecutors and the entire federal government, has been sentenced to six years in prison for physically attacking police officers on January 6, 2021. This woman, Audrey Ann Southard-Rumsey, 54, delivered a 15-minute tirade off the cuff, as reported by CBS News.
In her rant, Southard-Rumsey stated, “My whole life’s dream has been shattered because people have different political beliefs than mine.” Sitting in front of U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, she expressed her grievances, saying, “They don’t listen to us at the polling place. They don’t listen to us regular people in the real world.”
Southard-Rumsey pleaded with Judge Mehta to consider what she had to sacrifice and ended her speech by exclaiming, “It’s unjust.”
She was convicted of seven felony charges, including three counts of assaulting or resisting law enforcement and three counts of civil disorder.
Judge Mehta referred to her as a “one-person wrecking crew” and imposed an optional terrorism enhancement to meet the prosecutors’ requested sentence of 72 months, despite generally giving shorter sentences to defendants from January 6.
Southard-Rumsey, a resident of Spring Hill, Florida, worked as a vocal coach until her arrest in June 2021.
According to prosecutors, she used a flagpole to physically confront law enforcement officers defending the Capitol, causing one officer to hit his head on a marble statue’s base.
Video footage captured Southard-Rumsey shouting at Capitol Police, “Tell Pelosi we are coming for that bitch,” referring to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
She can also be heard in the video saying, “There’s a hundred thousand of us! What’s it going to be?”
Prosecutors highlighted her threatening posts on social media following the 2020 election, where she wrote, “HANG the TRAITORS!” and called for others to “go to their work and home, pull them out by their teeth and hang them for treason!”
