Florida Police Facing Accusations of Holding Son in Custody for Potty Training

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — An investigation is underway regarding Florida police officers who allegedly placed their 3 1/2-year-old son in a jail cell as a form of punishment for potty training accidents. Despite the ongoing investigation, the officers have not been suspended and remain on the job.

The Daytona Beach Shores Police Department has sealed most of the records related to the case, not providing any information or comments regarding the matter. The city’s public information officer, Tammy Marzik, stated that due to a court order, they are unable to comment at this time.

In October 2022, the couple admitted to placing their son in a jail cell on two separate occasions. The investigation video, recorded by a Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy, was initially released before being recalled due to the court order.

For their own protection, the child and parents involved in this case have opted to remain anonymous. The parents, both employed in law enforcement, have not provided any official statement regarding the investigation.

During the video footage, the child’s mother defended their actions, stating that they did nothing wrong and called the investigation “the definition of insanity.”

According to the father, their daycare center requested that children stop using diapers by the age of 3. However, their son was still having accidents, leading them to use various methods of potty training.

The father explained that he used their occupation as a police officer to illustrate the consequences of not following rules, as they would “take bad boys to jail.” He claimed that the tactic worked, and their son stopped having accidents.

The Florida Department of Children and Families confirmed their policy of responding to abuse allegations while maintaining confidentiality.

The repercussions and outcome of the investigation are unclear, as court records have been sealed and marked confidential. Lonnie Groot, a former city attorney, criticizes the city’s lack of transparency and hopes for greater accountability.
