The shooting, which occurred at a dollar store and resulted in the deaths of three Black individuals, prompted the man to question DeSantis about his stance on gun control. The governor, who is vying for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, adamantly denied being responsible for any criminal activity.
The audience member, a Black veteran, accused DeSantis of supporting policies that allowed easy access to firearms for “immature people,” which he believed resulted in the tragedy. The man further stated that DeSantis had essentially sanctioned violence against people like himself. DeSantis vehemently dismissed these claims, describing them as baseless.
The incident ended with the man being escorted out of the room, as reported by NBC News reported.
The shooting incident in Jacksonville involved a white gunman who targeted the Dollar General store, displaying swastikas on his weapon. Prior to the shooting, the gunman had been seen at a historically Black university but fled when approached by a campus police officer.
Critics have accused DeSantis of fostering an environment that enables such acts of violence by promoting lax gun laws. At a vigil held for the shooting victims, the governor faced boos from attendees. In addition, Democrats have criticized DeSantis for his efforts to suppress discussions on racism in America and eliminate diversity programs in schools.
In response to the criticisms raised at the press conference, DeSantis defended his record, emphasizing his support for law enforcement and dismissing the notion that he is indifferent to public safety.
