First Trooping the Colour celebrated by King Charles III as reigning monarch

London — King Charles III participated in the historic Trooping the Colour ceremony on Saturday, marking his first official birthday celebration as the British sovereign. This longstanding tradition, which has been observed for 260 years, commemorates the birthday of the reigning monarch, who serves as the technical head of the British Armed Forces. It is distinct from Charles’ personal birthday on November 14. The event was filled with vibrant and spectacular displays as thousands of loyal subjects joined Charles in paying tribute.

In a notable departure from tradition, Charles chose to ride on horseback during the ceremony, a practice that had not been observed in over three decades. He was accompanied by his son, Prince William, his youngest brother, Prince Edward, and his sister, Princess Anne, who served as royal colonels. The absence of the late Queen Elizabeth II made this Trooping the Colour ceremony particularly significant, as it was the first in seventy years to be held without her presence. Last year’s Platinum Jubilee, commemorating Elizabeth’s 70 years on the throne, was the largest Trooping ceremony in recent memory. It also marked the final time she inspected the soldiers and horses, representing Britain’s military prowess, before her retirement.

One of the highlights of the Trooping ceremony is the flypast, where senior members of the royal family gather on the Buckingham Palace balcony to witness an impressive display of aerial might. Notably, Prince Andrew, Charles’ brother, and Prince Harry, Charles’ son, along with Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, who are no longer senior working royals, were absent from the event. This further emphasized the changes in the dynamic of the royal family following Charles’ coronation, which did not grant any formal roles to either Andrew or Harry. Although the Trooping ceremony has had its share of challenges in the past, such as the attempted shooting of Queen Elizabeth in 1981, she continued attending the event on horseback for another five years until her beloved horse, Burmese, retired. Since then, she has chosen to travel by carriage.

During the final rehearsal for Charles’ Trooping ceremony, several guardsmen fainted due to the unusually high temperatures. However, the weather on the day of the event cooperated, leading to a smooth celebration.
