First 2024 endorsements revealed by abortion-rights organization

A prominent organization advocating for abortion rights, NARAL Pro-Choice America, has released its initial round of endorsements for the 2024 House elections. The group is backing twenty-four Democratic incumbents as a response to the Supreme Court’s annulment of Roe v. Wade, which guaranteed the constitutional right to have an abortion. In the midst of ongoing legislation in over two dozen states to restrict abortion access, NARAL emphasizes the critical need to elect candidates who will fight for reproductive freedom. Over the past year, several states have passed trigger bans and other laws, nearly eliminating access to abortion following the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling that overturned Roe. NARAL’s President, Mini Timmaraju, affirms that reelecting the endorsed representatives will bring the nation closer to enacting legislation that safeguards and expands abortion rights. Timmaraju also highlights the voters’ determination to protect abortion access and support pro-choice candidates, especially with the Republican Party reinforcing their out-of-touch policies. The Democratic lawmakers endorsed by NARAL include Mary Sattler Peltola (Alaska), Mike Levin (California), Yadira Caraveo (Colorado), Jahana Hayes (Connecticut), Nikki Budzinski and Eric Sorensen (Illinois), Sharice Davids (Kansas), Jared Golden (Maine), Hillary Scholten and Dan Kildee (Michigan), Angie Craig (Minnesota), Wiley Nickel (North Carolina), Chris Pappas (New Hampshire), Gabe Vasquez (New Mexico), Susie Lee and Steven Horsford (Nevada), Pat Ryan (New York), Greg Landsman (Ohio), Emilia Sykes (Ohio), Andrea Salinas (Oregon), Susan Wild (Pennsylvania), Chris Deluzio (Pennsylvania), Abigail Spanberger (Virginia), and Kim Schrier (Washington). These representatives predominantly hold seats in closely contested districts, making them prime targets for Republicans aiming to regain control of the House in 2024. The battle for abortion rights following the overturn of Roe has played a significant role in Democratic victories during the recent midterm elections. Exit polls revealed that abortion was a prominent concern for voters during that election cycle.
